예배가 현대기독교교육학 연구의 한 핵심 분야인 ‘기독교교육 커리큘럼’ 혹은 ‘기독교교육의 장(場)’이라는 측면에서 ‘예배의 완성도’는 기독교교육의 완성도와 밀접한 관계를 가진다. 그런 의미에서 지난 세기 말에 시작되어 한국교회의 예배, 특히 청소년과 청년층 예배에 큰 영향을 미친 ‘열린 예배’에 대한 논의는 기독교교육학 연구 차원에서 자연스러운 것은 물론 필요한 작업이라 할 것이다. 이 논문은 지금이 ‘열린 예배 이후의 시대’(post open worship era)에 진입했다는 판단과 함께 기존의 전통예배를 ‘제1의 예배’, 열린 예배를 ‘제2의 예배’라 할 때 완성도 면에서 이 두 예배를 뛰어넘는 ‘제3의 예배’가 요청되는 시점이라는 인식으로 시작한다. 이 논문은 전통예배의 한계라고 할 수 있는 현대 대중성 확보 측면에서의 난제를 열린 예배가 ‘대중문화 친화적 정향(orientation)’을 통하여 일정 부분 해소한 점에 대하여 긍정적인 평가를 하는 입장을 전제한다. 그러나 이 논문은 완성도가 보다 높은 ‘제3의 예배’를 디자인하려 할 때 답습되어서는 안 될 열린 예배의 한계, 구체적으로 말하면 열린 예배의 태생적인 역기능 요인들을 주목하면서 이 역기능 요인들을 비판적으로 논의하는데 초점이 있다. 이런 맥락에서 이 논문은 한마디로 열린 예배의 역기능적 요인들에 대한 비판적 재고(review)라 할 수 있다. 이 논문에서 주목하는 비판적 재고의 내용은 구체적으로 열린 예배의 예배 ‘성립조건’(rationale) 충족 여부에 관련된 예배신학상의 딜레마(dilemma), 공예배(公禮拜)로서의 열린 예배의 가치 혹은 위상 설정상의 차질, 그리고 열린 예배의 실명론(實名論) 측면에서의 넌센스 요인이다. 이 논의를 통하여 열린 예배에 내포된 태생적 한계의 궁극적인 원인을 소위 세속사회의 ‘대중문화 친화적 정향’으로 규정한다. 그리고 이 후의 ‘제3의 예배’ 디자인 작업에서 이 한계들이 답습되지 않을 수 있게 하는 한 방안으로 “예배의 ‘상향식 재정향’”을 제안하면서 논문을 마무리 할 것이다.
Abstract
This paper is to identify the limits of ‘open worship’ of the Korean churches which has been originated from ‘seeker's service’ of the American churches. Specifically, these limits are from its dilemma in worship theology, the mistake in valuing the worship, and its nominal nonsense. With a perspective of Christian education, this discussion is with the traditional idea that worship is one of the major facets of Christian education curricula. Accordingly, the pivotal presupposition of this paper is that the quality of worship is one of the most influential elements which decide on the quality of the Christian educational practice. The theological dilemma of open worship is focused on the issue of the rationale of worship in relation with the qualification issue of the worship participants. This discussion will be with traditionally diverse definitions of worship. The mistake in valuing worship is focused on the issue of the overvaluation of open worship as public worship of the local churches. This discussion will be through some comparisons between open worship and seeker's service in respect of the valuation of the two. The nominal nonsense issue of open worship is focused on the gap between its name and the reality of open worship. 'Open education' will be referred in explaining this issue. Through this discussion, it will be identified that the inborn limits of open worship are rooted in its spirit that is 'the pop culture-friendly orientation.' In conclusion, the results of the pop culture-friendly approach to worship will be pointed in negative sense. Finally, a few suggestions will be proposed to overcome the limits of open worship caused by the pop culture friendly approach. The expectation of this discussion is not merely to point out the limits of open worship. Ultimately, this paper is to evade its limits in designing the future worship services to create a better quality of worship as a part of Christian curriculum.
