Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the characteristics of aesthetics, by studying art works of fallen world and try to configure redemptive art to overcome this pathological phenomenon with focusing on Calvin Seerveld's modern reformed aesthetic theory. The reason why this article specially aims to study the aesthetic phenomenon on the key concept of fall and redemption is because the development of modern art is closely interrelated to corruption caused by human sin and one can see the most beautiful glory of God in this world through our Lord Jesus Christ. This study will reveal how much art by the grace of God can be exposed on the effect of the sin. Moreover, it will be discussed that the aesthetic renovation which will overcome the ugliness of this fallen world is fulfilled by the artistic accomplishment achieved in the incarnation of Jesus Christ. In this regard his aesthetics gives us important question. How can reformed worldview be systematized into aesthetic principle? His answer is as followed. According to reformed worldview, arts is good and positive because it is a part of Creation. Arts needs redemption and restoration because it represents ugliness of the fallen world. Aesthetic redemption of this fallen world necessarily comes true only by means of artistic accomplishment in Christ's incarnation. One can see that Seerveld used Christian(reformed) worldview which consists of the key concepts of creation, fall and redemption as aesthetic principle.
