Abstract
Is it right that we understand the theology of Helmut Thielicke as reformational or reformed theology? Has not he been world-widely acknowledged as a Lutheran or a Evangelist? For the proper answer to these questions we'll examine Thielicke's concept of the Eucharist, because the Eucharist is an indicate which helps us discerning between Roman Catholic and Protestant as well as between Lutheran and Reformed. It surprises us that Thielicke follows even Calvin in the famous debate on the Lord's Last Supper between Luther and Zwingli. According to Thielicke the reformer of Geneva rejected the position of Zwingli decisively; he has missed the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist, as he considered the bread and the wine as merely symbol. In contrast to Zwingli Luther perceived rightly this presence, but he also made a mistake fixing the presence of Christ into the elements. Modifying and refining the intention of Luther Calvin constituted his conception of spiritual presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Thus Thielicke lays emphasis on the similarity between Luther and Calvin. It is no more than a theological ideology to absolutize their differences with one-side. Consequently it can be said that the reformational theology means for Thielicke a bible-centered and church-centered theology.
