Abstract
SNS makes it easier to form new social relationships and maintain existing ones. However, online communications on SNS often lack human warmth since it is difficult to convey social cues or emotions through text alone. Recently, various types of emoticons have been developed, allowing SNS users to more effectively express social cues and/or emotions online. The use of emoticons on SNS may facilitate the forming of new social networks, which is known as bridging social capital. This study adopts the Use and Gratification Theory to examine the effect of emoticons on bridging social capital as it relates to SNS and suggests that the different motives behind emoticon use effect the rate and diversity of emoticon use, in turn effecting the formation of bridging social capital. To verify the hypotheses proposed in this study, an online survey was conducted, and data was analyzed using the Structural Equation Model. Results showed that of the motives of emoticon use, the motive of “following trends/habits and having fun” had a significant impact on the rate and diversity of emoticon use and improved the formation of bridging social capital. The results of this study are expected to expand the scope of available research on emoticons and social capital as it relates to SNS, and provide practical implications for SNS users and companies that provide emoticons.
