Abstract

In this study, I reviewed previous literature examining about hot police pursuits, which has been published until 2000. In particular, I paid attention to applicability of research findings to Korean Police Force as we are about to develop our own pursuit guideline. In that sense, identifying key variables that had significant impacts on pursuit outcomes was quite useful. Similarly, studies on costs and benefits analysis of pursuit driving seemed to be an interesting approach providing deeper understanding of the issue from economical perspective. Survey on public perception about police pursuit driving was not only informative but also inevitable if we wanted to get more public supports on this issue. The primary purpose of present study can be summarized into one statement: “Given a different setting of Korean Police Force from that of USA, how could we possibly develop our own pursuit guideline that is efficient to police and safe to public.”In an effort to give an idea to policy makers in Korean Police Force, I suggested exemplary alternatives available to us such as high-tech pursuit devices and guidelines for conducting highspeed chase in a safe manner.
