Abstract
This paper describes the design and initial results of an innovative mentoring program that connects middle school girls with female mentors working in biology and bio-engineering-related fields and high school mentors who are interested in science and mathematics. The purpose of the project was to provide urban middle school girls with role models who have pursued science in high school and beyond. The paper provides evidence of the power of a long-term science mentorship program to engage students at all levels of academic achievement with science content; career opportunities in biology, bio-technology and bio-engineering; and issues specific to female students, such as gender stereotyping. The benefits of the program are summarized in five areas: 1) Increased understanding of science and confidence in doing science; 2) Potential to provide enjoyment while learning science; 3) Broadened views of future career options in biology and bio-engineering related fields, 4) Increased awareness of gender issues; and 5) Comfort gained with using ICT (Information Communication Technology).
