초록

Robinson Crusoe, although appropriating then-popular travel narrative, mainly focuses on the hero’s confined life in a deserted island and the process of his domestication of the surroundings. By focusing on Crusoe’s preoccupation with home-making and the efficient household management, this paper proposes a new reading of the novel as domestic fiction promoting domestic virtues embodied in feminized Crusoe. It starts with examining the novel’s reception by conservative moral reformers in the late eighteenth century. Then, it discusses how Crusoe establishes himself as a householder and good manager and how he creates domestic felicity by constructing a secure, domestic space and giving an order to it through efficient arrangement of time and labor. Finally, it investigates Crusoe’s effort to transform a native Carib into a good, religious servant in connection with his earlier conduct book, The Family Instructor, which stresses the significance of instructing servants as a crucial part of the government of the household.
