초록

This paper seeks to contextualize Elizabeth Hamilton’s Memoirs of Modern Philosophers (1800) against the backdrop of political and literary discourse of the turn of the century, and thereby remap Hamilton’s place among women writers in the aftermath of the French Revolution. Much more famous than Jane Austen during her lifetime, yet long-forgotten under the label of anti-Jacobin, Hamilton was the author of several tracts and fictions on female rights and women’s education including Memoirs. The main body of this paper discusses the plight of women readers under the shadow of the Revolution, and argues that the author’s sympathy lies with revolutionary ideas and religious toleration while simultaneously warning against the catastrophe of revolutionary idealism. The conclusion places Hamilton in the line of Mary Wollstonecraft in her representations of the plight of women outside the protected borders of home and family, but also suggests repositioning Hamilton as a precursor of Austen in regard to her female characters who presage the plight of women readers in Austen’s novels.
