Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to clarify the location of the Jungupwon(淨業院), a royal nuns temple in the Joseon Dynasty. Discussions about where the Jungupwon were located have always been a dispute among scholars from the 1960s to the present. The reason for this controversy is that the position of the Jungupwon in the Joseon Dynasty annals and the positions of the Jungupwon established by King Youngjo are quite different. In contrast to Changdeok Palace which is located in From early Joseon Dynasty to Gwanghaegun, the old stone monument of Jungupwon built by Youngjo is located in Seongin–dong, Jongno–gu, Seoul. Yeongjo built a tombstone with five letters in the house where Queen Jungsoon lived as a part of memorial service for king Danjong. The letters were meant to be the 'old place of the Jungupwon(淨業院舊基)'The Jungupwon which appeared in the annals repeated their abolition and reestablishment several times, but they were maintained as Buddhist nun community in the mountain area behind Changdeok Palace for about 200 years. For this reason, it has been argued that the reason for the establishment of the old stone monument of Jungupwon in Sungin dong was because Yeongjo was wrong or that the second Jungupwon was here. However, in the ancient documents of Haeju Jeong family, which were recently transferred to Jangseokgak, the Buddhist nuns who were driven out of the city in yeonsangun period went out to live in community in Inchangbang. It was confirmed that at that time Queen Jungsoon was the chief Buddhist nun in Jungupwon. This indicates that the group residence of the Buddhist nuns in Jungupwon was established in Sungin dong at that times when Jungupwon was officially removed from the yeonsangun period to the king jungjong period. The reason that Youngjo named the old stone monument of Jungupwon at the old house of Queen Jungsoon was because the descendants of Jung Misoo confirmed this fact. the descendants confirmed that Queen Jungsoon lived in Inchangbang and served as the chief Buddhist nun in Jungupwon. Yeongjo, who confirmed the fact, set up a memorial stone monument for Queen Jungsoon in her old house. On the other hand, Cheongyongsa Temple, where the monument is still standing today, is a newly built temple after the monument was built. According to the report of Lee Jung Soo, who went to see the house just before Yeongjo was started to the construction work, the site of house of Queen Jungsoon remained vacant and there were no houses in the vicinity. After the monument was erected, it seems that the nuns of the Inchangbang area, which succeeded to Queen Jungsoon, built Cheongyongsa temple.
