고령운전자의 자가운전을 결정짓는 주요 영향요인 및 심리사회적 특성 연구

최근 한국사회의 급속한 고령화로 인한 고령운전자의 지속적인 교통사고 증가추세는 교통안전분야에 있어서 선제적 대응이 필요한 사회적 문제로 대두되고 있다. 고령운전자의 운전능력에 관한 다수의 선행 연구들에서는 노화에 따른 신체적 ․ 심리적 기능 저하가 고령운전자의 사고위험성을 증가시킨다는 연구결과를 보고하고 있으며, 외국에서는 이미 고령운전자에 대한 운전적성검사제도 강화 등을 통해 사고예방 노력을 기울이고 있다. 그러나 단순히 특정연령을 기준으로만 삼는 고령운전자 면허관리제도는 고령자의 이동성을 제한하고, 이 같은 제한이 사고 감소라는 순기능 외에 고령운전자 ‘삶의 질’을 저하시키는 역기능도 있다는 상당수 의견들도 있다. 본 연구에서는 고령운전자의 자가운전에 영향을 미치는 다양한 심리사회적 요인들을 면접조사를 통하여 살펴보았을 뿐만 아니라 고령운전자들이 느끼는 운전부담감이나 운전능력 지각수준 등 심리사회적 특성 등도 설문조사를 통하여 비고령집단과 비교분석을 실시하였다. 연구 결과, 고령운전자들이 주관적으로 느끼는 안전운전능력 수준이 자가운전을 선택하는 데 가장 큰 영향력을 미치고 있었음에도 불구하고 고령운전자들이 평균적으로 지각하는 주관적 운전능력은 비고령집단과 비교하여 유의미한 차이를 보이지는 않았다. 따라서 고령운전자의 교통사고 감소를 위한 교통안전교육이나 면허관리제도 강화 등 교통안전 대책의 실효성을 극대화하기 위해서는 고령운전자들의 운전적합성을 객관적이고 과학적으로 진단할 수 있는 평가도구 개발 및 준거가 마련되어야 할 것이다.
Abstract
Increasing instances of elderly driver related traffic collisions derives from the rapid aging of Korean society resulting in an urgent social issue. Many studies report that elderly driver related traffic collisions increasingly occur as their physical and psychological functions deteriorate. Some nations have already strengthened aptitude tests for elderly drivers in order to reduce traffic accidents. However, these age-based restrictions may limit mobility and decrease their quality of life. This study focuses on finding various factors affecting elderly driving and compares elderly driving-related psychological factors with non-elderly drivers. Results suggest the largest influencing factor on whether or not the elderly decide to drive, is their own perceived driving ability. The study also noted an insignificant difference between age groups on self-perceived driving ability. In order to maximize the effectiveness of traffic safety countermeasures for elderly drivers, such as strengthening education and driver license management system, we need to develop reliable tests and standardization norms to objectively assess elderly drivers' fitness to drive.
