Abstract
This Study analyzed the impacts of COVID-19 on travel patterns in Daegu, where the initial outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic occurred in South Korea. Additionally, this study examined whether the impacts of COVID-19 differ depending on special-purpose area. This study employed a panel fixed-effects model. I used daily subway ridership as a dependent variable and the number of new confirmed COVID-19 cases as an explanatory variable. The results show that an increase of one additional confirmed COVID-19 case was associated with a decrease of approximately five subway ridership. Furthermore, subway stations located near schools, department stores, and other transportation experienced a larger decrease in ridership compared to stations without these facilities. The ridership reduction was more pronounced in commercial areas with department stores and other transportation than in residential areas with schools. The findings indicate that COVID-19 changed residents’ travel patterns, resulting in a reduction in subway demand. Moreover, the change in travel patterns was larger in commercial areas than in residential areas. Therefore, this study suggests that it is crucial to consider the regional heterogeneity in designing transportation policies during health crisis.
