Abstract
This paper examines the role of linear order as a means of coding arguments in Japanese. Japanese has relatively flexible word order and thus argument roles are marked with case marking particles. However arguments are not always marked with case marking particles especially in naturally occurring conversation. The current paper examines a conversational corpus and argues that linear order, particularly the final position of the predicate in a sentence and the positions of arguments with respect to the predicate, is a coding means in Japanese for those arguments without case marking particles. Thus case marking particles are used most often when the roles of arguments are not coded through linear order. It is argued that in an intransitive clause the position before the predicate codes the S role. In a transitive clause, the position immediately before the predicate codes the O role, and the position before that codes the A role. When arguments are placed in these positions, their grammatical roles are coded through linear order alone, and no case-marking particles are needed. However, when arguments are placed in positions different from these, their argument roles have to be coded through the use of case-marking particles.
