Abstract
This article, entitled “Chūya Nakahara and Kenji Miyazawa,” explores the relationship between the two poets and the characteristics of their poetry, with a particular look at the expressive techniques used to describe the emotions relating to death. Its main findings can be summarized as follows. Firstly, Chūya Nakahara resonated with Kenji Miyazawa’s theory of art. Both poets fostered a longing for a pre-linguistic artistic world, namely a theory of art based on surrealistic concepts. Secondly, in their methods of recalling the dead, Kenji took a first-person view directly affected by his own emotions, whereas Chūya maintained a certain distance from the dead, adopting a third-person view that excluded feelings of sorrow. Thirdly, in their methods of conversing with the dead, Kenji depicted dialogues with the dead through vivid, ordinary conversations, adopting an expressive style that conveyed feelings of joy. In contrast, Chūya succeeded in summoning the dead in an extraordinary space and conversing with them. Still, the content of conversation lacks emotions, let alone the expression of joy. Rather, it employs a style that expresses feelings of self-blame and regret. he pursued his unique style by eliminating emotions and crafting stories in a restrained manner.
