Abstract

In this paper, I investigate and analyze the use of "るwords" in the structure "Korean food + る," which is created from Korean-language stems, focusing on those with fewer aspectual elements. Specifically, I examine how these "るwords" are used on social media. For the "る words" of "Korean food + る" to become established, independent of trends, several factors need to be considered, as indicated by previous research. First, the structure must consist of three or four morae. Second, the stem should refer to a widely recognized and popular food that is commonly available either through franchise restaurants or as something that can be easily prepared at home, with the name of the "Korean food" being clearly identifiable. Third, there should be no direct Japanese equivalent for the name of that "Korean food." These three elements are seen as essential for the establishment of the "るword." Although the popularity of the "Korean food" itself may act as a catalyst, when examining the time of its first usage, it is evident that these words are created independently of trends. Looking at a ten-year time span, it can be concluded that being a trendy food is not a necessary condition for the establishment of such terms. While this paper only deals with "Korean food + る," it is worth noting that there are many other "るwords" in the mix of Japanese and Korean. Future research will focus on investigating their usage patterns and whether there are differences from the basic norms of "るwords" in general.
