Abstract
This study aims to propose an ideal diet for modern humans based on the research centered on the āyurveda diet for the transformation of body and mind by taking advantage of constitutional diet. Āyurveda is an old traditional medical system of India, in which there exist prescriptions for regimen and healthy diet depending on the constitution, and āyurveda teaches that only when regimen is correct, diet can be also effective. Āyurveda diet therapy emphasizes the law of five prāṇa (vitality) and sāttva diet, as well as choice of proper seasonal, constitutional diet. Here, a proper constitutional diet means the choice of contrasting foods. Āyurveda stresses on a proper diet as the base of all treatments. Food is not only the first medicine but also the most important medical treatment, and āyurveda recommends sāttvatic or pure food and emphasizes natural foods. In this way, āyurveda aims to improve physical health and to keep the balance of doṣas. Diet can affect emotional impulse deeply engraved in consciousness, and remove an unconscious habit, thereby purifying and transforming the body and mind. Three doṣas are vāta (air), pitta (fire), kapha (water), and when these three characteristics are unbalanced, the disease occurs. We can balance these characteristics, promote medical treatments and psychological stability, and further experience to be a tranquil mind through a proper diet. The purpose of this study is to provide informations about āyurveda diet which can transform the body and mind.
