Abstract

Recognitions, regulations and images of the women shown in Manusmṛti and Nüsishu are compared in this study. What are common in recognition of women are: non-acceptance of women’s independence, their seductive characteristics which are prone to destroy their countries and families, their weakness, etc. But we can find different points of view on the causes by which these common points are brought. It is regulated in Manusmṛti that women are evil in their nature. However, it is insisted in Nüsishu that the problems are caused not by their nature but by their bad habit. Also, it is regulated in Manusmṛti that women should be absolutely obedient to their husbands. Even though Nüsishu has similar regulations, it is recommended in Nüsishu that, when their husbands do something wrong, women should advise their husbands to correct it. The common codes for how women should behave are as follows: Wives should respect their husbands. Men and women should keep away from each other. Women should serve but a single husband. But details in regulations are a little different. Even though it is emphasized in Nüsishu that wives should be obedient to their husbands, it is also emphasized that they should advise their husbands with polite attitudes when their husbands do something wrong. But Manusmṛti does not allow women to speak against their husbands. Also, the grounds are different for which men and women should keep away from each other. ‘Possibility of seduction’ is the ground for that in Manusmṛti. But ‘a group of women is totally different from the one of men’ is the basis for that in Nüsishu. Therefore, it is different for the category and the target that men and women should keep away from each other. As serving but a single husband is emphasized in both of Nüsishu and Manusmṛti, it is also common that all the women’s acts to maintain their chastity are justified or praised, such as making their bodies weak, making their faces damaged, committing suicide, etc. In both Confucian and Hindu cultures, there are common codes idealizing the woman who protects her chastity. Also, it is common that this tendency has been reinforced from ancient times to modern ones. But it is emphasized in Nüsishu that education is required in order to foster ideal women. Also books on women’s education are constantly published in Confucian cultures. On the other hand, education for ideal women is never discussed and women are excluded from education in Manusmṛti. Also, ideal women as wives are mentioned in Hindu cultures but the ones as mothers are never done, which is different from Confucian cultures.
