사진 포트레이트는 오랜 기간 지시 대상으로부터의 쟝르라는 인식 때문에 외연적인 투명성의 환상을 주었고 이러한 인식은 도리어 사진 포트레이트라는 쟝르의 풍요로운 발전을 위태롭게 했다. 사진의 역사를 통해 사진 포트레이트의 역사와 미학은 진보하는 가운데 굴절을 거치면서 우연적인 혹은 자발적인 변형들을 초래해왔다. 현대 사진의 다원화된 장 속에서 사진 포트레이트 쟝르 역시 큰 변모를 겪고 있다.본 논문은 사진 포트레이트의 역사적 전개 속에서 전통적인 포트레이트를 파괴하는 경향을 보이는 현대 사진 포트레이트의 대표적인 한 양상을 연구해 보았다. 이를 위해 이러한 현대 사진 포트레이트의 변화 양상들을 집약적으로 표출하고 있는, 프랑스의 국립 도서관에서 1997년 열린 <단■복수의 포트레이트(portrait, singulier pluriel) 1980-1990)> 전에서 소개된 작가들의 작품을 분석해 보았다.분석 작업을 통해 알 수 있었던 것은 다음과 같다: 현대 사진 포트레이트에 접근해가는 중요한 한 방식은 전통적인 포트레이트에서와 같이 포트레이트의 대상과의 동일화에 참여하는 것이 아니라 사진가 및 관객과 맺고 있는 관계로서의 타자성의 다양한 방식들을 통해 포트레이트의 대상을 이해하는 것이다. 이러한 방향의 연구를 통해 최근에 등장하고 있는 디지털 환경 하의 새로운 사진 포트레이트 담론에 대한 논의를 재고해보는 계기가 될 것이다.
Abstract
The photographic portrait gives rise to the illusion of denotative transparence, because of the recognition as a genre of reference. By the way, this recognition endangers the photographic portrait. The history and aesthetics of photographic portrait has progressed with accidental and voluntary transformations. The photographic portrait has been changed in the multiple domain of contemporary photography. This study will investigate the definition of portrait and then its modern function and history briefly. In addition, the characteristics of contemporary portrait will be analyzed by the work of representative portrait- photographers in the exhibition in 1997<portrait, singulier pluriel1980-1990> in the national library in France.By the analysis the work of representative portrait- photographers in the exhibition as follow: the important way of approaching to the contemporary photographic portrait is not to identify with the photographic object, but to understand it by the various way of the alterity as the relation with the photographer and the viewer. This study will give the opportunity to the reconsideration of the discourse of new photographic portrait in the digital environment.
