Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect on a student's listening ability and interest in English and to suggest an effective method for teaching and learning English in overcrowded classes through the use of small group interviews in elementary English education. The experiment was carried out for 16 weeks from March to July, 2003. The subjects of this study were two fourth-grade classes from a local elementary school in Kongju, Korea. The effectiveness of teaching and learning using small group interviews was analysed through listening tests and questionnaires. The results of this study were as follows: First, a student's listening ability was increased, as well as some improvements on communication and task accomplishment. Second, according to an analysis of the questionnaire surveys, students' interest and confidence in listening class gradually increased.
