Abstract
This paper proposes and motivates the feature INT based on Chomsky's (2001a) notion of interpretive complex, claiming that INT-feature motivates INT-movement just as φ-feature motivates Agree-movement. The interpretive complex or INT-features are linguistic properties that may be manifested in terms of prosody or information structure. This paper claims that INT-feature is an uninterpretable unvalued feature in the probe just like φ-feature. The unvalued INT-feature is not a lexically-posited feature but a derivationally-introduced feature since it is introduced in the probe as attached to the derivationally-introduced EPP-feature. Throughout the paper, I motivate two types of INT-features: Type A (=strong INT-features: focus or topic, etc.) and Type B (=weak INT-features: specificity, definiteness, D-linking, or scope-binding, etc.). I examine the two types of INT-motivated movements throughout various cross-linguistic data.
