초록

The present study aims to point out how a knowledge of the external history is of importance in the investigation of Canadian English and to elucidate how Canadians really use their language and what identity it possesses, and in doing so seeks to stimulate further studies. The first part briefly traces the settlement (i.e., external) history of those parts of the country that came to be known as English-speaking Canada. Canadian English is a record of the various events and peoples who have made Canadian English what it now is. The second part, which constitutes a descriptive account of the language structure of Canadian English, is to inquire into all the significant aspects of Canadianisms, distinctively characteristic of Canadian English. The paper closes with reflections on the future or prospects of Canadian English. The variety that we describe in the article is Canadian Standard English, the English spoken in cities from Ontario to British Columbia by the middle and upper classes, which is remarkably homogeneous.
