Comparative Research of Popular Etymology with Cultural-Historical Elements Applied on the Etymological Analysis of Spanish Place-Name

The Journal of Studies in Language 29.4, 773-794. Several toponyms in the Hispanic territories are arbitrarily interpreted depending on their etymology or origin. This phenomenon is widely observed in popular etymology. For instance, many people consider that Oropesa comes from the combination of “oro” (gold) and “pesar” (to weigh), and Granada comes from the fruit’s name of its homonym: “granada” (pomegranate). Furthermore, etymons of Cuenca and León are wrongly interpreted as the same with those of cuenca and león respectively, although their etymons have different historical background. In this research, I propose that it is worthwhile to explain etymons of certain place-names through a historical-cultural approach in order to minimize the errors that could occur in the historical linguistic studies
