Conceptual Metaphors of TIME: Egocentric, Allocentric, and Objectified Ego Interpretation Models

An abstract concept such as TIME is understood in terms of SPACE. The spatial FRONT-BACK is associated with the temporal FUTURE-PAST (i.e., deictic), as well as the sequential EARLIER-LATER(i.e., non-deictic), as witnessed in many languages(Moore (2004, 2006, 2011), Núñez and Sweetser(2006), Traugott(1975), among others). Interestingly, FRONT can be read ambiguously as FUTURE or PAST(cf. similarly in the BACK version). I will recast this puzzle in terms of FUTURE and EARLIER. In addition, both FRONT and BACK can indicate FUTURE, as in We’re looking ahead to the following weeks, which was accounted for in terms of the interplay of the two metaphors: EGO-moving and TIME-moving. Instead, I will explicate these examples with confirming the idea of Ego-centricity(i.e., deixis). Moore(2006, 2007, 2011)’s an ego-perspective frame of reference and a field-based frame of reference will be restated as Egocentric, Allocentric, and Objectified Ego Interpretation Models in Korean.
