초록
It is generally assumed that adjective-noun phrases in English are subject to stress shift (e.g. UNknown WORDS, PREmature VICtory). However, there is some variation in stress shift (e.g. monoTOnic TREND, foreSEEN TRAgedy), whose sources are largely unaccounted for in the literature. In this paper, I report on an experiment designed to investigate native speakers’ intuitions about the proclivity for rhythmic stress shift in English [level-2 affixed adjective + noun] phrases. The results show a significant prosodic effect, with NO-LAPSE being faithfully observed, and an active morphological effect on stress shift. On the other hand, the phonological structure of nouns and prefixes was found to play no role in the stress shift.
