Abstract
This paper focuses on visual representation techniques for knowledge structures. To understand, remember, and manipulate the world successfully, we concern the process of organizing and representing the knowledge in the mind. This paper reviews several schemes for knowledge representation such as predicate logic, semantic networks, frames, and scripts, showing that the use of visual languages is compelling for many reasons. Several software programs which are currently the most popular for creating visual representation such as CmapTools, Inspiration, Smart Ideas, Axon, and CharGer are reviewed in this paper. It was found that those programs facilitate ease of adaption and manipulation, dynamic linking, storage and retrieval of information in the field of natural language understanding. And some visual programs were implemented for demonstrating how they work for representing indirect anaphora resolution and discourse structure analysis. In conclusion, this paper shows that visual representation which is based on semantic networks appears to be useful for knowledge representation.
