초록

This study examined what and how teachers from the middle and high schools assess students in their English language classrooms in terms of purposes, methods, and procedures of assessment. The total of 353 teachers completed the survey questionnaire that was of four parts: participants’ background information, and purposes, methods, and procedures of assessment. It was found out that the teachers from the two school settings demonstrated a similar pattern in purposes and procedures of assessment probably because few substantial differences in their personal teaching history and educational settings which could contribute to the similarities in their assessment decision-making. Some meaningful differences were also found in methods of assessment, favoring middle school teachers’ constructive and effortful tryouts. Accordingly, it is suggested that further research have to engage qualitative research methods to get a fuller and finer picture of why the teachers implement assessment in the ways they do.
