Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore the conversations of autistic student interacting with their teachers. This study used a qualitative research method. Two autistic students, and two teachers participated as conversational partners. The data was collected through participation observations, in-depth interviews, video recordings, and audio recordings of the conversation situations. A qualitative analysis of communication breakdown resulted in a useful classification of the conversational characteristics of autistic students and their conversational partners. The findings were as follows: First, the characteristics of clarification request in the case of communication breakdown during conversation between autistic students and adults are categorized into repeated clarification request and the absence of clarification request caused by cognitive inflexibility. Second, the response characteristics of autistic students resulted from requests for clarification by adults are shown in the process required concrete answers by adults. This finding was divided and analysed in two parts: statement repair strategy required by repeated clarification and statement repair strategy by addition of clues. For this purpose, the behavior characteristics of clarification and the related factors are discussed in the finding. On the basis of the conclusion, I suggest some practical ideas for the communication improvement of autistic students, for following studies.
