Abstract
Some patients with stroke showed the intriguing disorder of postural control in sitting and standing, compared with the general upright posture that is displayed in the most patients with unilateral brain damage. It has suggested that there is a “pusher syndrome”, which is a tendency to extend this arm, actively push away toward the paretic side and resist attempts at passive correction toward the earth-vertical upright posture. This case report described the symptoms and prognosis through five patients with unilateral brain damage who have severe pusher syndrome during 6 months follow-up. The findings showed that there were no relationships with age, time after onset, the damaged hemisphere, paralysis, sensory loss, hemianopsia, unilateral spatial neglect. However, all patients showed apraxic behavior, although the neurological symptoms related to pusher syndrome was not confirmed. Contraversive pushing seems to influence negatively the independent a daily of life and the functional outcome in rehabilitative program. Also, syndrome combined with apraxia deteriorated the period of functional recovery.
