Abstract

The purpose of this study was to search for the effective therapeutic method for delayed onset muscle soreness(DOMS) in clinical, rehabilitation, and sports field. Subjects were 90 university students, and were randomly assigned to 3 groups(control, TENS, Cryo). Artificial DOMS was induced by eccentric muscle contraction. Low frequency current transcutaneus electrical nerve stimulation(TENS) was applied to TENS group, and cryo therapy was applied to Cryo group. No medical treatment was applied to control group. Subjective pain scale measured with visual analogue scale, peak torque measured with isokinetic dynamometer, muscular activity measured with surface electromyography were analyzed repeatedly before and after DOMS. As a result, subjective pain scale was increased till 2 days after DOMS in control and Cryo group, and increase till 1 day after DOMS and decreased thereafter in TENS group. Peak torque and muscular activity were decreased till 2 days after DOMS and increased thereafter in all groups. And peak torque and muscular activity on 3rd day after DOMS in TENS group were higher than those in control group, but peak torque and muscular activity on 3rd day after DOMS in Cryo group were lower than those in control group. In conclusion it is suggested that TENS should be effective in pain reduction after DOMS, and that cryo therapy should be applied under consideration after DOMS.
