Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of elastic and non-elastic taping on the navicular bone height and static balance in children with cerebral palsy, as well as contribute to the application of taping techniques for improving foot alignment and balance in children with cerebral palsy. Elastic and non-elastic tapes were applied using the low dye taping technique to 14 children with cerebral palsy with flat feet. The navicular drop test was performed using a ruler to determine the navicular bone height, and the Zebris force platform was used to determine static balance(center of pressure movement area, path length, and average velocity). These measurements were performed randomly before taping, after elastic taping, and after non-elastic taping. The results of the navicular drop test significantly decreased after elastic taping condition than before taping, after non-elastic taping condition than before taping, and after non-elastic taping condition than after elastic taping. The results of the static balance test showed that the center of pressure movement area, path length, and average velocity were all significantly decreased after elastic taping condition than before taping, after non-elastic taping condition than before taping, and after non-elastic taping condition than after elastic taping. The result of this study means that elastic and non-elastic taping increase the height of the navicular bone of children with cerebral palsy with flat feet, correct foot alignment, and increase ankle stability-thereby having a positive effect on the static balance. Based on this intervention method, it is expected that both elastic and non-elastic taping will be utilized in both physical therapy and daily life for flat footed children with cerebral palsy.
