초록

Humans attend to meaningful information in complex environments, and sustained attention plays an essential role in information processing and learning. However, aging has been associated with a decline in this ability, and eye-blink activity has been proposed as a physiological indicator of attentional state. In this study, a total of 80 participants (younger adults: n=40, 23.15±2.76 years; older adults: n=40, 71.02±6.36 years) completed four visual tasks, including three conditions with varying levels of visual meaningfulness and one modified vigilance task (mVT). Results indicated a significant difference in blink rate across task conditions (²(2)=24.53, p<.001), with the lowest blink frequency observed during the meaningful video condition (Task 3). In this condition, older adults showed a significantly higher blink rate than younger adults (U=586.0, p<.05). During the mVT (Task 4), older adults demonstrated a higher blink rate, lower accuracy, and slower reaction time, and blink rate was negatively correlated with response accuracy (=−.739, p<.001) and positively correlated with reaction time (=.789, p<.001). These findings suggest that eye-blink patterns may serve as a potential bio-marker for detecting age-related changes in sustained attention.
