Abstract

The Geneva Conference in 1954 was an international conference where unification of two Koreas was discussed because they had not accomplished the unification despite the war. However, the United States had an negative attitude from first to last in the conference. The administration of Lee Seung-man also objected to holding a conference and wanted the conference to fail as soon as possible. So far, enough studies on this point have been conducted, but studies on positions of the former Soviet Union, China, particularly North Korea are insufficient. This thesis is a study on their positions which have not been noticed. The main reason studies on this subject are insufficient is because there are limitations in documents. Using newly discovered data from the former Soviet Union and news papers from North Korea, this study analyzed positions of North Korea, China, and the former Soviet Union. The result of this study revealed that North Korea prepared for the conference carefully with China and the former Soviet Union. It was also identified that North Korea and China had very similar countermeasures and that they submitted the countermeasures in the conference. In addition, they made efforts actively to obtain even a small result. Meanwhile, the neutralized unification of Korea was raised by important figures in North Korea, who had worked for the temporary Korean government. Of course, their method of unification did not affect the conference. However, this thesis identified that this method had not a few effects on discussion between the former Soviet Union and North Korea on a method of Korean unification and North Korea's reunification model based on federalism.
