Abstract

These days, historians have largely agreed that history should be explained through a lens of culture. Even in the past, historians regarded a culture as an important factor to explain economical and social phenomena.Therefore, cultural history in the method of a historical research is not new. Rather, it should be seen as a critical method to approach to historical understanding a world. Now, it is time to take this historical trend in exploring german Wirtschaftsbuergerttum. Historians, in fact, regarded german Wirtschaftsbuergerttum as an exceptional (if not abnormal) case when compared with a bourgeois in other western part of Europe. Since so called a cultivated bourgeois did a prominent role in the process of german modernization, moreover, it is true that the role of german Wirtschaftsbuergerttum has been underestimated. Hence, this study tries to see the role of german Wirtschaftsbuergerttum through the lens of culture. Yet, it starts with a basic assumption that a bourgeois had a clear purpose of making profits instead of using a conventional idea that a bourgeois had modernity. I try to explore that the social relationships among peoples in the ecomony was maintained and supported by a clear purpose of making money. When peoples in the economy started building up and sustaining the relationship with multiple social strata, they made many and various efforts to accomplish a deal (or transaction). This transaction in the economy reveals something beyond investing and expending capital. Culture of german Wirtschaftsbuergerttum in the process of modernization, therefore, was another name of social expression in order to make solid capital reproductions by manipulating various social relations.
