Abstract

The aim of this paper is to examine the roles of the Jeju Committee of South Korea Labor Party(南朝鮮勞動黨 濟州島委員會) in the Jeju 4·3 Resistance. Especially, This paper focused on a point of the union of the Jeju Committee and the Jeju people. The power of Resistance was a cooperation between resistance leaders and the provincials. In Jeju, the leftist tried to resolve urgent problems through the mass organization of an united front, rather than to operate for a class struggle. Therefore, Jeju was controlled by the People's Committee from 1945 to 1946. The Jeju Committee of South Korea Labor Party had adopted an armed-struggle to resist an oppression of USAMGIK and the rightist, also to disturb the election which was conducted by only the South Korea not including the North Korea on May 10. And raised a armed-uprising in April 3, 1948. By the decision of Jeju Committee and a support of the provincials, Jeju became a single region interrupting the 5·10 election. The armed struggle of the Jeju Committee has been much criticized for reason that it was just an adventurism, out of the consideration of power balance. But that point of view only an interpretation based on the results, without the considerations of the causes and backgrounds of Jeju 4·3 Resistance. The massacre happened during the suppression of the resistance. Besides, Jeju was only a region obstructing the 5·10 election. And the cooperation between the guerrilla unit and the people was a motive for the resistance, which last over a year in a poor circumstance. In other words, the people's will for seeking the unified government was represented by the resistance of the Jeju people. This means that the 4·3 Resistance is a crucial turning point in the contemporary history of Korea.
