Abstract

This article looked into partisan activities with focusing on leadership and participants of Yosun Incident from the spring of 1949 to the July of 1951. It also paid attention to issues which have not been elucidated in the existing studies on partisan activities so far. It examined partisans’ activities in the Jiri Mountain Guerrilla Unit and the 2nd corps after Geumpanjeong incident(death of Kim Jihoi, a leader of the 14th regiment), regiment reorganization of the 2nd corps and patrol operation of Jeonnam area which responded to suppression operation during the winter, activity path of the leadership and the participants of the Yosun Incident and so on after the Korean War in detail. A few features are prominent in this article. It is that partisan’s formation, its geographical range and the leading authority of partisans after the Korean War changed significantly. Accordingly, partisan activities’ character changed a lot. Firstly, partisan’s formation changed conspicuously after the Korean War, especially after the retreat of September 28. At this point, partisans were composed of North Korean People’s Army, peripheral organizations’ members, local leftists, occupation policy’s collaborators as well as the leadership and the participants of the Yosun Incident. Secondly, geographical range of the leadership and the participants of the Yosun Incident was extended. Partisan’s geographical range used to be focused on the Honam area and the part of South Gyeongsang province around the Jiri Mountain area after March of 1949 until the Korean War. After the Korean War broke out, partisan’s geographical range extended to Nakdong River area and extended not only to South and North Jeonra province but also to South and North Gyeongsang province, Gangwon province and North Chungcheong province after the retreat of September 28. It was far over the range of the ‘South and North Jeonra province and the part of South Gyeongsang province’ as the Special Act of the Yosun Incident provided. Thirdly, leadership of the partisan activities changed significantly. Partisans who entered into the mountain area carried out activities under the leadership of Lee Hyung Sang with the support of Jeonnam provincial party or Western Gyeongnam provincial party from the early period. They worked out in the 2nd corps as being included in the command system of Korean Labor Party’s South Labor Party faction in the latter part of 1949. They were included in the Korean Labor Party’s unified command system after the Korean War and carried out harassment operation of the rear.
