Abstract

The purpose of the design (study) is to build a space to showcase stone sculptures to tell Budda’s life story as a new method of edification for children. The subject of the design is a Buddhist temple called Shinhuengsa located in Hwasung city. Shinhuengsa is the first temple in Korea to offer temple stay programs for children and has been operating various edification programs as a leading exemplary temple. The theme and concept of the design reflect teachings of Buddhist religions for which the general public would find familiar as well. The reason for choosing such familiar theme and concept is to effectively communicate the great philosophy of Buddha and stories of Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and nirvana. The main focus of the design was to express sceneries of Buddha when alive. After visiting the 8 Buddhist sacred places in India, the color and construction structure of a brick is chosen to be appropriate for symbolic display of the sceneries and has been reflected into the design. The use of such material and structure is quite different from Buddhist temples or shrines in Korea which are mostly built with granite. Edification garden built with this new design helps to break and reset the boundary of Buddhism as “hard to approach” religion and is winning much support in that perspective. The garden also serves as an opportunity for us to witness that there can be new ways of edification instead of strict and difficult approach of the past and confirm that more of such spaces with Buddhist themes can be built. However, there have been a few problems identified after the construction is completed such as connecting the flow of visitor traffic, problems arising from vegetation mainly composed of herbaceous plants, difficult microclimate control due to no water and desolate landscape. Improvement on such problems are needed in the future.
