Abstract

Frequently, middle ear infection has been recurred after upper respiratory infection in children. Because of tendency that second-line antibiotics are more prescribed in otitis media than first-line antibiotics in Seoul National University Hospital, we investigate the use of antibiotics in otitis media and relationship with resistance rate. The charts of 26 patients who diagnosed middle ear infection were retrospectively reviewed for 4 weeks (from 1 to 28 October, 2004). They were all treated with second-line antibiotics and prescribed 7 agents in 29 oral antibiotics. In them, amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (Augmentine 7:1 49.1 mg/ml ) and cefixime(50mg/1 g) occupied about 70% of total usage. Mean age of patients was 4.8 ± 2.9 years; average prescription day was 12.5 ± 4.6 ; and boys were double of girls. We set up the mean price of medicine for 13days in 5 years old boy. In result, the mean price of second-line agent(28,000 won) was six times than that of first-line agent(4,500 won). The reason that second-line agents were more expensive and commonly used is supposed to relatively high antibiotic resistance. Also, dosage forms that is pertinent to children, for example, powder for oral suspension, dispersable tablet, are required for each antibiotics to make a more frequent choice of dosage forms.
