Abstract

Cognitive linguistics has focused on the study of metaphor since the publication of Metaphors We Live By (by Lakoff and Johnson) in 1980, while the study of metonymy has been neglected. Currently a lot of work on metonymy has been carried out. The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of metonymy on some English constructions by comparing traditional explanations about them with metonymic ones. The results are as follows. First, metaphor and metonymy have been comparatively analyzed. Metaphor is a conceptual shift which maps the structure of one domain onto that of another domain, and metonymy is a conceptual shift from one conceptual entity to another within the same frame or domain. The motivation of metonymy is threefold: economy, highlighting, and the ease of access to the reference target. Second, some grammatical phenomena of dynamic and stative predicates can be explained by the metonymic relationship RESULT FOR ACTION. Third, generic references can be better explained by four kinds of metonymic relationships. Third, the conversion of count nouns into noncount nouns, and that of noncount nouns into count nouns by means of metonomy can be given a better explanation than the traditional ones
