초록

This study is aimed to investigate Korean university students' competence of English 'adverb+adjective' collocation. In order to explore Korean students' collocational competence, the following research questions were raised: (1) How well do Korean university students understand English lexical collocation: 'adverb+adjective' type and use it? (2) Is there any correlation between their collocational competence and TOEIC scores? (3) Is there any correlation between their collocational knowledge based on the collocation test and t-scores of the adjectives: popular, boring, different, qualified? The subjects were a total of 35 university students. Four English adjectives: popular, boring, different, qualified were selected and tested. The results were as follows. First, the average score was relatively low as 17.62% The subjects' general English competence correlated significantly with their collocation knowledge. Second, the average scores of each adjective were in the order of popular (33.33%), boring (19.05%), different (14.29%), and qualified (3.81%). Third, the scores on questions concerned with each adjective were considerably different, depending on adverbs which the adjective combines with. Fourth, t-scores of corpus regarding each adjective didn't correlate with the scores of each question. From the above results, this study argues that Korean university students' ability of English 'adverb+adjective' type collocation is very limited. This is probably due to their method of studying vocabulary, which is just memorizing it without understanding its actual use in authentic contexts. Thus, more systematic teaching methodology and related textbooks should be developed to improve the collocation ability of EFL learners.

Abstract

Fourth, t-scores of corpus regarding each adjective didn't correlate with the scores of each question. From the above results, this study argues that Korean university students' ability of English 'adverb+adjective' type collocation is very limited. This is probably due to their method of studying vocabulary, which is just memorizing it without understanding its actual use in authentic contexts.
