초록
This study explores prosodically induced effects on the acoustic expression of laryngeal phonological contrast among Hindi stop consonants. It is to examine whether prosodic strengthening is revealed consistently in languages with different contrast systems. The target Hindi stop tokens are analyzed from initial and medial positions of utterance, with or without contrastive focal accent. VOT and F0 at the onset of the following vowel are measured as the main acoustic correlates of the laryngeal features from the speech of five male Delhi Hindi speakers. Results reveal very limited enhancement in marking contrast under prosodically prominent contexts. Unlike the robust contrast enhancement of the accented positions in other languages, statistical results indicate that the effect of accent on acoustic measures is not very distinctive and consistent in Hindi. However, paradigmatic contrast enhancement is observed from the accented tokens. The rather reduced prosodic variation at the segmental representations in Hindi is discussed as a presumable effect of the crowded language inventory system.
