초록
The Korean postposition ttala(se) is one of the impressive particles in many aspects as it exhibits properties typical of grammaticalization processes. As a postposition in Present -day Korean, ttala(se) derived from a Korean manner verb ttaluta `follow' shows an interesting semantic relation as the concept of `deictic motion of manner' and the `counter-expectation' marker. The primary sense of ttala(se) is `follow'. From its original sense are developed those of `along', `in accordance with', and `counter- expectation'. Considering the investigation of the polygrammaticalized paths (Craig 1991) of ttala(se) [along > logical connective > counter- expectation] (cf. Rhee 1996), this paper specially focuses on its semantic change, and the semantic extension patterns triggered by cognitive mechanisms. For examining the semantic development of ttala(se), this paper suggests the grammaticalization process that is largely enabled by the conceptual mechanisms along the event schema (Heine et al. 1991), and presents an explication for the semantic relationship between `accompanying motion' and `counter-running' notions based on the cognitive forces that operate in language use. In addition to the investigation of the semantic change, this paper also describes the morpho-syntactic change of ttala(se) as [motion verb > adverbial marker > postposition] (cf. Baik 2006). Reanalysis, among many others, is considered one of the crucial forces to evoke morpho- syntactic change of ttala(se) derived from a lexical verb
