초록

This paper investigates the English wh-cleft constructions in order to explore the relationship between information structure and clefted constituents using the classification of Johansson (2002) and Hasselgård (2004). The findings of this study indicate that almost a quater of the wh-clefts with all kinds of clefted constituents are informative-presupposition clefts while most linguists assume that the information structure of wh-clefts shows only the type of stressed-focus clefts. Moreover, the wh-clefts with various clefted constituents have a range of discourse function in the organization of the informational flow. In addition, there are correlations between four patterns of information structure and their discourse functions: Type A (given+given) with summative and contrast, Type B (new+given) with topic linking and thematization, Type C (new+new) with topic launching and contrast, and Type D
