Abstract

The aims of this paper are to find how to process an ambiguous sentence presented in garden-path sentence form and to reveal the difference of disambiguated sentences between normal controls and bilinguals using ERPs (Event-related Potentials). Many studies related to the syntactic reanalysis and repair in ambiguous sentences have typically resulted in the increasing of the processing load. This type of loads is often exemplified with a violation of the minimal attachment rule known to be a economical principle of parsing strategies. The current ERP results newly revealed that disambiguation processes supplemented with infix like a relative elicited more P600 than the corresponding ambiguous sentences and .showed that more and long-lasting P600 in the bilingual group than in the normal controls as expected. Furthermore the latencies and duration of N400 in the normal controls occurred earlier and long-lasted than that of N400 in the bilingual group. These findings suggest that the normal group experiences difficulties of semantic processing for ambiguous sentences a little earlier regardless of the insertion of the word inducing ambiguity, and shows the capacity of low ambiguity resolution in requiring the disambiguation process. Lastly with the result of more P600 in the disambiguating sentences in both groups, we concluded that the application of parsing strategy is likely to be directed forward using less difficulty while being faced with complex sentences like ambiguity-related constructions.
