Abstract
Is a high sense of humor related to more positive reported levels of personal burnout? This research examines the relationship of sense of humor differences and personal affectivity with perceptions of personal burnout. Positive and negative styles of self directed humor were assumed to have opposing relationships with personal affectivity or individual burnout. University students provided data for this study. Data was used to verify the mediation of the relationship of sense of humor with individual burnout through the personal affectivity. A more extensive research model, using personal affectivity as a mediator in the relationship between humor differences and burnout, was tested by means of our structural equation analysis. The results from the analyses support the proposed mediators model in which the potential benefits of a positive humor style and the potential damage of a negative humor style appear to buffer the effects of burnout. The additional distinction between positive and negative uses of humor was critical in our data. While other articles were able to show that a composite measure of several variables mediated the relationship of humor styles with perceived burnout, our research indicate that each separate affectivity operates as a potential mediator. Future research should consider how differences in humor styles might play a role in the more general processes connecting stable differences in underlying self views to psychological outcomes, for examples, personalty, attitudes, emotions and stress, etc.
