Abstract
This article analyzes the phenomenon of grammatical as well as lexical ‘repetition’ shown in Hemingway’s short story “A Canary for One.” This analysis is based on the idea that certain intuitive and subjective evaluation of a literary work can effectively be explained by adopting certain concepts/methods of systemic functional linguistics and the devices of literary stylistics. I show that the mechanism of repetition exhibited in Hemingway’s short story can be subsumed under the notion of cohesion, which turns out to be responsible for developing the plot of the story, producing the literary effect of irony and drawing strong emotional responses from the readers.
