초록

Despite a call for increased instruction on sociopragmatic competence and the teaching of politeness strategies in the classroom, there is still a tendency for it to be neglected in instruction. Thus, this study aims to investigate Korean student perceptions toward politeness and politeness instruction in the English classroom through a questionnaire and subsequent interviews. This study found that many of the participants did not have a clear understanding of how to be polite, and were apt to believe that, compared to their native Korean language, politeness does not hold as much importance. Furthermore, students with a perceived lower proficiency in English were more likely to answer that they have never received instruction on how to be polite in English. This study calls for teachers and curriculum designers to place an increased importance on teaching politeness via explicit instruction.
