Abstract

Jai Young ParkIn The Marrow of Tradition(1901), Charles W. Chesnutt realistically and controversially describes racial struggles between blacks and whites in the United States since the Proclamation of Emancipation. Ostensibly based on the tragic historical event, which H. Leon Prather calls "Wilmington Racial Massacre" of 1898, the novel deals with unbalanced twoness between whites and blacks through such bisymmetrical characters as Olivia and Janet, Tom and Sandy, and Josh and Miller. White Olivia and black Janet are half-sisters but the former ignores and despises the latter. Olivia attempts to disconnect her relationship with Janet; however, as Chesnutt implies, it is impossible because they share the same father Samuel. Examining Samuel's interracial relationship and the relationship of Olivia and Janet, first, this essay explicates the significance of twoness between blacks and whites and exemplifies the unbalanced twoness. It next examines the relationship of Tom and Sandy. White Tom who mimics black Sandy actually demonstrates white people's hypocritical psychology. Using Freud's and Lacan's psychoanalytical theories, this essay rectifies the myth of, what whites call, "blacks' savageness" and reveals whites' savageness that fundamentally engenders the unbalance of racial twoness. Finally, considering the representation of Josh and Miller in the context of racial struggle, this essay discusses the ideological effect of the unbalanced twoness caused from whites' violent abuse, sexual assault, and physical manipulation over blacks throughout history. Overall, this essay scrutinizes the bisymmetrical characters through various perspectives and exposes the meaning of "the marrow of tradition" for the United States at the turn of the centuries.
