Abstract

Donald C. BellomyThe American South is difficult to define in physical terms, or even to conceptualize meaningfully except as a cluster of socially constructed memories and attitudes. A significant aspect of Southern identity over the past two centuries has been an ongoing dialogue with other Americans and themselves about the meaning of modernity and the relationship of Southerners to it. In the first, crucial phase of this discourse, the Southern need to justify slavery to outsiders and itself converged with a broader effort to criticize trends in modernity by contrasting them with traditional values.
