너쌔니얼 호손의 도덕적 비전 탐색은 『주홍글자』와 『칠 박공의 집』에 이어서 시간과 공간적 배경을 작가의 동시대로 설정하는 블라이드데일 로망스』에서도 나타난다. 『블라이드데일 로망스』에 대한 지금까지의 많은 평가는 주로 작가의 자전적 경험을 바탕으로 한 실험적인 유토피아적 공동체 삶의 실패에 주목한 측면이 있다. 특별히 작품의 등장인물이자 화자의 역할을 맡고 있는 마일즈 커버데일에 대한 부정적인 모습은 이 작품에 대한 회의적 해석에 많은 정당성을 부여하였다. 타인의 삶과 내면의 모습 엿보기, 신뢰성이 부족한 화자, 도덕적 성숙의 결여 등은 커버데일에 대한 대표적인 부정적 평가이다. 그러나 커버데일에 대한 평가는 작품의 전체적인 주제와 관련하여 이루어져야 하겠다. 소설의 주요인물에는 공동체의 지도자인 홀링스워스, 홀링스워스를 사랑하는 제노비아, 제노비아의 동생이면서 홀링스워스를 사랑하는 프리실라 등이 있다. 누구를 작품의 주인공으로 보는가의 문제는 작품의 이해에 있어서 매우 중요한 문제이다. 블라이데일 공동체의 성공과 실패의 관점에서 실제적 지도자인 홀링스워스를 주인공으로 볼 수 있으나, 입체적 등장인물로서의 뚜렷한 발전이 빈약하다는 점에서 설득력이 떨어진다. 작품의 시작과 끝을 살펴볼 때 그래도 가장 많은 인식의 변화를 경험하는 인물은 화자이자 등장인물인 커버데일이라고 할 수 있다. 그러한 측면에서 볼 때 블라이드데일 로망스』는 커버데일의 형제애 탐색에 대한 읽기로의 해석이 가능하다. 그에 대한 많은 부정적 평가는 오히려 탐색자로서 그가 취할 수밖에 없는 자연스러운 태도를 간과한 측면이 있다. 블라이데일 공동체는 형제애의 실현을 추구하고 있으나, 주요 인물들을 통해 볼 수 있듯이 구성원들에게는 각자의 이기적 목적과 위선적 모습이 있음을 볼 수 있다. 작품의 주요 모티프는 “네 이웃에 대하여 거짓 증거 하지 말찌니라”(출 20:16)라는 십계명의 아홉 번째 계명에 토대를 두고 있고, 블라이드데일 공동체의 해체를 가져오는 주요 원은 바로 주요 인물들의 거짓과 이기심이라고 할 수 있다. 홀링스워스는 자신의 계획을 달성하기 위하여 주변인들을 이용하려는 이기심을 보여준다. 제노비아는 프리실라에 대한 그녀의 태도에서 볼 수 있듯이 따뜻한 인간애가 결여된 인물로서 형제애로 이루어진 공동체의 이상에는 관심이 없고 홀링스워스에 대한 개인적 관계의 성취에만 관심을 보여준다. 화자이자 등장인물인 커버데일은 공동체적 삶의 추구 현장에서 형제애의 이상 추구와 실패를 직간접적으로 목격함으로써 인간의 내면에 자리하고 있는 이기심과 위선의 본질을 발견하게 되고 형제애에 대한 궁극적인 의미를 되새긴다. 그러한 의미에서 『블라이드데일 로망스』는 커버데일의 형제애 탐색에 대한 여정으로서의 읽기가 가능한 작품이고, 이것은 작품에 대한 많은 부정적 시각을 극복하는 중요한 동인이 될 것이다.
