Background: Patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) should berelatively well informed about the disorder to control theircondition and prevent flare-ups. Thus far, there is no accurateinformation about the disease awareness levels andtherapeutic behavior of AD patients. Objective: To collectdata on patients’ knowledge about AD and their behavior inrelation to seeking information about the disease and itstreatment. Methods: We performed a questionnaire surveyon the disease awareness and self-management behavior ofAD patients. A total of 313 patients and parents of patientswith AD who had visited the The Catholic University ofKorea, Catholic Medical Center between November 2011and October 2012 were recruited. We compared thepercentage of correct answers from all collected questionnairesaccording to the demographic and disease characteristicsof the patients. Results: Although dermatologistswere the most frequent disease information sources andtreatment providers for the AD patients, a significantproportion of participants obtained information from theInternet, which carries a huge amount of false medicalinformation. A considerable number of participants perceivedfalse online information as genuine, especiallyconcerning complementary and alternative medicine treatmentsof AD, and the adverse effects of steroids. Somequestions on AD knowledge had significantly differentanswers according to sex, marriage status, educational level, type of residence and living area, disease duration, diseaseseverity, and treatment history with dermatologists. Conclusion:Dermatologists should pay more attention tocorrecting the common misunderstandings about AD toreduce unnecessary social/economic losses and improvetreatment compliance.
