율곡의 우환의식과 사회사상

Abstract

This thesis is an inquiry about Yulgok's thought on culture and society. The 1st chapter analyzes the type of culture and the criteria of social thought, and the 2nd chapter describes Yulgok's concern about how one should cultivate and practice his own morality, and furthermore realizes the social justice, which is the fundamental concern of Confucianism as a manifestation of worried mind. This worried mind of Yulgok shows his awareness of his contemporary situation and his prescription for the situation. The 3rd chapter considers Yulgok's social thought as a principle of his theory of mind-cultivation. The 1st section(the theory of learning) shows that Yulgok places importance on the education of establishing Sung Confucianism's view of values, which is the realization of the idea of moral philosophy and aimed at the realization of The Principle of Royal Road on the basis of cultivating one's morality. The 2nd section(the theory of good and bad) shows that Yulgok's theory is directly connected with the problem of good and bad, viz. the discussion of the nature of human mind. As a matter of fact, Yulgok is deeply interested from moral cultivation of individuals to the social norm and the principles and structure of national administration. This clearly shows Yulgok's cultural thought, which is based on his worried mind, and aimed at achieving the world piece through the cultivation of one's morality, the administration of his family, and the defense of his nation. Yulgok's cultural and social thought is characterized as his consistent system of thought which ranges widely from moral cultivation to the resolving the social problems and civilization of society.
